Do you understand the new tax that will be imposed on July 2010? Many Canadians do not realize the impact this tax will have on them. The Gst and the Pst taxes will be combined and nearly everything will cost you 13%. At the moment you do not pay PST which is 8% on labour - example- mechanic, plumber, electrican, appliance serviceman , building contractor etc. After July next year you will be charged 8% on their labour. So instead of only paying 5% GST , you will pay 5%GST and 8%PST which equals 13%. Which makes any kind of repair or project you are comtemplating a lot more expensive! You can thank Mr.McGinty and Mr. Harper for that! I will be posting more information on this tax in the next few weeks.

Are you concerned about icicles hanging down from your roof or a buildup of ice on your roof? This occurs when snow melts off the roof over the heated portion of the home and freezes when the water comes to the cold portion of your roof like the overhangs or eaves. The question becomes - why is the snow melting in the first place.Sometimes there is nothing wrong and you cannot prevent this from happening. If you get warm days with temperatures outside melting the snow and cold nights below freezing this can cause ice buildup. If your house has a lot of dormers or a complicated roof design , this can cause a loss of heat between the framing lumber that have been nailed together. This occurs in the natural drying out of the lumber after the house has been built The things you can prevent are loss of heat through your roof surfaces. Poor insulation and / or poor ventilation in your attic can let heat pass through the roof deck and shingles causing the snow to melt. Poor insulation is easy to improve, but ventilation needs an explanation. Most roofs are designed to handle the humid air that passes through the soffit and out a roof vent, not through the roofing. If this circulation of air is hampered in any way then you will get ice dams. Calls us for a consultation or a qualified roofer in your area.
